Supergreens – green superfoods – to combat the acidification of your body

THE ACID-BASE BALANCE
Acidification is taking place all the time in our bodies as a result of the production of energy and the workings of our normal metabolism. These various processes automatically create (acidic) waste products. However, the level of acidification can be intensified by unhealthy eating habits, excessive consumption of sugar and alcohol, to little (or too much) physical activity, and smoking. Up to a certain point, our body has several mechanisms at its disposal that can help to keep the acid-base levels in balance. Excess acids can be shed via the lungs (CO2), the skin (acidic sweat) and the kidneys. For the drainage of the kidneys, the liver converts acidic waste products into uric acid. In addition, the body also has a natural buffer system to keep the level of acidity more or less constant. Even so, it is important to compensate for any excess of acidity by eating more alkali-generating foodstuffs. This will have an ‘alkalizing’ effect. A diet based on 70-80% alkali-forming foods and 20-30% acid-forming foods is ideal. Achieving the right acid-base balance is vitally important for the health of your body. Too much acidifying food will quickly upset this balance. Enzymes are a good example of the possible harmful consequences that may result, since their effectiveness is very dependent on the level of acidity in their micro-environment. Even relatively small changes in this level can have a negative effect. In addition, acid environments are also an ideal breeding ground for the development of sicknesses.
The body’s discharge mechanisms for the removal of acids vary considerably from person to person. For example, someone who rises fresh and active each morning is naturally good at discharging acids during his/her sleep. However, mental pressure can also have an influence on this discharge process. When a person is stressed, discharge will take place more slowly, so that the level of acidification increases. Because they are not removed quickly enough, a concentration of acids will build up, resulting in the typical coated tongue, sour body odour and bad breath. Other indicators may include belching, skin problems, muscle cramps and a bloated feeling after meals. This creates a vicious circle, because an acidified body makes a tired body even more tired…
ACID-FORMING AND ALKALI-FORMING FOODS
Acid-forming foods are primarily protein-rich, often with a high calorific value and refined. This category includes, amongst others: beef, pork, poultry and shellfish, but also white bread, soft drinks and coffee. (see figure 1) The alkali-forming foods are generally low-protein, low calorie and rich in minerals. They include, again amongst others: most fruits and vegetables, like kale, broccoli, aubergines, bananas, figs, apples, melons, grapes and avocados (see figure 2).
