Le chad\u00f4 (le chemin du th\u00e9) consiste en une s\u00e9quence de maniements ex\u00e9cut\u00e9s dans le but de jouir de mani\u00e8re optimale du th\u00e9 tout en entretenant ainsi certaines traditions typiquement japonaises. Une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie du th\u00e9 commence toujours par la consommation d\u2019un aliment (sucr\u00e9) ou d\u2019un repas l\u00e9ger pour attiser les papilles gustatives. Le th\u00e9 est ensuite pr\u00e9par\u00e9 en silence selon les r\u00e8gles prescrites. Le Matcha doit \u00eatre consomm\u00e9 en silence et dans une atmosph\u00e8re de s\u00e9r\u00e9nit\u00e9. La position optimale est assise sur les genoux, les mollets repli\u00e9s vers l\u2019arri\u00e8re en direction des talons (posture de m\u00e9ditation ou malasana). En signe de respect, il convient de pencher le buste vers l\u2019avant lorsque le ma\u00eetre de c\u00e9r\u00e9monie sert le th\u00e9 \u00e0 chacun et de tenir ensuite sa tasse dans la paume de la main gauche pour lui faire ex\u00e9cuter trois circonvolutions \u00e0 360\u00b0.
